John Frederick Herring, Sr (born 1795 in London and died 1865 in Tonbridge) was a British painter and sports artist of the 18th and 19th centuries. Herring was famous for his expressive depictions of racehorses and agricultural scenes, often illustrating horse-riding events.
The artist is said to have taken an early interest in horses and initially worked as a signmaker and coachman. He made inn signs and decorative elements for horse-drawn carriages before producing commissioned works for the nobility.
As "Official Animal Painter" (from 1845) to the Duchess of Kent, he soon produced commissioned work for Queen Victoria, who was a patron of the arts for the rest of his life.
His eldest son, John Frederick Herring the Jr, continued his father's work and became a successful animal and sports painter in his own right.
Today, Herring's work is represented in the collections of the Tate Gallery in London and the Watford Museum Collection of Fine Art, among others.
