Bjørn Wiinblad was born in Copenhagen in 1918, the son of a typographer, journalist and politician. As a teenager he illustrated his own poems, learned to play the piano from Louis Glass and the flute. Wiinblad first attended a drawing school, then studied painting and illustration at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen from 1940 to 1943. During this time, he came to ceramics through his friend Richard and worked with Lars Syberg. After graduating, Wiinblad earned money doing odd jobs to afford materials for his work as a freelance painter and designer. He also completed an apprenticeship as a typographer alongside his studies.
