Vendedeiras (2022) - Colorful Painting

Neves, Nelson

This vibrant acrylic painting by Nelson Neves captures the essence of Cape Verdean culture, depicting two faceless women carrying bowls of freshly caught fish. Their anonymity symbolizes resilience and collective identity. The bold brushstrokes and vivid contrasts bring the ocean, cityscape, and mountainous landscape to life, creating depth and movement.

Neves’ signature style, influenced by African and European cultures, blends realism and abstraction to celebrate tradition, labor, and cultural identity. The painting is a dynamic tribute to the strength of working women and the daily life of coastal communities.
