According to our expert, this is a study by Henry Matisse. He made this artwork on litho transfer paper. This has the advantage that Matisse could use it everywhere for all his drawings. If it failed, he threw the paper away.
When Henri Matisse was satisfied, he took it to the famous Moulot printer in Paris. Moulot then transferred it to stone, after which it was printed. Mourlot was also a printer for Manet, Picasso, Toulouse-Lautrec, Joan Miró and many others.
Naturally, this study is provided with a legible signature and year. Due to the special nature of this copy, there is no issue numbering.
Henri Matisse is mainly known as one of the most important artists of the "fauves" - the "wild beasts". Although they concentrated on intense colorism as a development of impressionistic ideas and an expressionistic spirit, you can see the fauvistic thought also in the graphic artworks like this one. A sense of naturalness, nativeness and innocence is clearly recognisable in the few lines of this lithography. The tense and strong defined lines with the characteristic momentum is typical for Matisse and makes this piece of art an original of high value.
